Broad Bodied Chaser image by munki-boy
The Black Darter dragonfly is fairly common in moorland areas and can be found in great numbers. The female Black Darter and immature males are yellow in colour, the adult males are black.
Males have a broad, blue abdomen with yellow patches, and females an all yellow abdomen.
Very common as the name suggests, the Common Darter can be bright red but colour varies to quite pale or paler with red areas.
The Four-spotted Chaser is very common and can live in a variety of habitats from moorlands and wetlands to lakes or ponds.
The Keeled Skimmer lives on bog type wetland such as our local peat mosses.
The translucent wing membrane is coloured yellow close to the body, making the Yellow Winged Darter fairly easy to identify.
