A small nature trail that follows the Raveden Clough down from the old tram road that now leads to Horrocks Wood. The nature trail looks a bit neglected lately, but don’t be deceived - it can be a little gem on the right day.
There’s always some litter here as it’s next to the school, but the woodland is nice and I’ve seen green woodpecker many times near the dead tree below the waterfall area. There used to be a circular route from Smithills Hall Park but today it’s best to pick your own route from the many paths, there’s usually a way back :)
Note along the stream there’s a number of old weirs, sluices and tunnels that once controlled the flow of water for use by mills further downstream.
An area of north Bolton, site of the historic Smithills Hall and parkland, some great industrial archaeology and a small nature trail.
Smithills Hall Park has a fine historic house, nature trail and parkland and a nice waterfall
